Coming up with ideas...

When entering the process of writing, having a solid idea is vital. (The idea forms the base of your writing.) Having a firm idea ensures that the text isn't monotonous or convoluted, and instead has an easy-to-follow storyline that progresses congruously.

Ideas develop from inspiration. We may get inspired in numerous ways- movies, books, real-life events, people we meet etc.

EXAMPLE- A MOVIE OR A BOOK:

Think about your favourite movie or book. What do you love about it? Was there something special?

Perhaps there was an old castle in that movie. You could take that old castle from the movie but add your own twist to it! Maybe someone gets locked in and taken to the past. Maybe they meet the queens and kings that used to live there.

EXAMPLE- A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:

You could also be inspired by your life. Notice things about a special place you may have visited.

Perhaps you went on a boat and saw a dolphin? Did you wonder where the dolphin lives, and where it went? What does it do underwater? You could write about the dolphin and its life.

Sometimes, you could dramatise a personal experience, or over-exaggerate it to make it interesting for the reader.

DO NOT COPY!

*Remember that inspiration is different from copying. You may be inspired, but it's important to make it your own. Do not be afraid to think out of the box.

PLAN PLAN PLAN!

*Though sometimes, you may start at a point and spontaneously develop a story, I recommend that you outline the story before writing, for you will soon find that your story may be unable to progress due to past, unplanned or futile events in the storyline. Having a rough outline in place is extremely helpful when writing anything.
