Tip #10: STICK TO YOUR STYLE

Hello everyone! This is the tenth of 12 writing tips to improve your writing coming your way. These 12 tips are from my experience of writing a book, writing poems and giving exams.

My tenth tip for you is to STICK TO YOUR STYLE

As a writer who writes passages frequently, it is important to develop a style of writing. You should have a particular method of communicating your thoughts that is unique and exciting for a reader. Despite developing your own style, every piece shouldn’t sound the same. The style can be adapted to different essays about a variety of topics that are each gut-wrenching or heart-warming in their own ways.

When developing a style of writing, stick to it throughout the entire piece. This is even important to consider for longer pieces- like books which you write over many days. As mentioned in previous posts, the writing should be of a similar style.

For example, the first chapters shouldn’t sound as if they are simpler and less mature, perhaps written by a younger person than the latter chapters. Though it might really be a more mature version of the writer writing the next chapters, the entire piece should still flow smoothly with a similar style.

Use a specific style of vocabulary, describe items in a similar way, space out dialogues and allow them to impact the reader at similar times.

For example, in my writing style, I like to intersperse detailed descriptions in the middle of my narratives. Other writers like to have a longer period of action-packed narratives to really captivate the reader.

As long as your style appeals to the reader and works for you, it is completely fine. Your style of writing can be developed over a period of time and can be matured as well. Just ensure that throughout your passage your tone and style are consistent because your reader may read your story in one go, or over a couple of days. Therefore, the essay should be constant and regular, avoiding too many changes in tone.
