Tip #12: REVIEW

Hello everyone! This is the last of 12 writing tips to improve your writing coming your way. These 12 tips are from my experience of writing a book, writing poems and giving exams.

My last tip for you is to REVIEW YOUR WRITING.

When writing a story, especially if it is long, it is important to keep reviewing your previous work at regular intervals. If you are writing a book, reading previous chapters will help you recollaect every minute detail you may have mentioned, and recall specific charactrer traits of your characters, for example. This will help you keep your tone and style consistent (tip 10) and continue to intersperse character traits through your story.

For example, in my book Sally’s Adventures of Rockileville, I have included and adorable little character called Miranda beaver. It is easy for readers to forget that she is infact a beaver because she walks around with Sally (a human) solving problems (like a human would.) Therefore, spreading out lines that show Miranda is still a beaver throughout the story is vital. For example, using words like ‘gnawing’, ‘furry’ or ‘scratching’ to describe Miranda reminds readers that she is still a beaver. Reviewing my work make sure that I, as a writer, also didn’t get carried away and forget that she is a beaver.

It may also allow you to update your previous work using new vocabulary, sentence structures and styles that you may develop as you grow as a writer. Sometimes, you may write something that doesn’t make sense at all, but in the spur of the moment, it did. Reviewing your writing can help cut down frivolous or trivial details that no longer make sense to you.

I hope these 12 tips help all you writers blossom while writing. Feel free to reach out to me for any questions, or further tips you would like from me!
