Tip #4: DO NOT DRIFT

Hello everyone! This is the fourth of 12 writing tips to improve your writing coming your way. These 12 tips are from my experience writing a book, writing poems and giving exams.

My fourth tip for you is DO NOT DRIFT.

'Not drifting' indicates writing in a way where your thoughts are collected and well-organised so that you do not drift from your topic. It is very likely, to forget your plan entirely, or leave out some important aspects when nervous, or excited to jump into writing. It is regrettable when you have already written paragraphs and then you remember to add something important.

For example, in a descriptive essay, you may have written in a hurry, and once almost done, you might remember to write similes, metaphors or personifications. It makes it extremely difficult to go back and force things into your piece. It disrupts the flow, making your text seem unnatural.

Therefore, I advise you to write slowly, remembering everything you need to write and possibly keeping a checklist as well. Try to stay as focused as you can and do not drift away from the topic you are writing about.
